Brand identity

3 things to consider when creating your brand identity

Field noteA brand is a voice, personality, feeling and recognizable promise.

Whether you are starting a business or rethinking an existing one, your brand shapes how people recognize you and how they feel about you. It is often the first impression of the company. Three questions create a stronger foundation.

1. What is your brand essence?

Know the core of the organization: why it exists, what it believes and the change it wants to make. Products and services explain what a business sells. Essence explains the character behind those choices.

A clear essence guides more than a logo. It helps a team decide how to write, which opportunities fit, how customer experiences should feel and what the organization will not compromise. It should be distinct enough to inspire loyalty and simple enough for employees to use.

2. What is your story?

People connect with businesses when they understand where they came from and why the work matters. Share the problem the organization wants to solve, the experiences that shaped it and the mission and culture behind the public offer.

Let customers see behind the curtain. Thoughtful stories can turn satisfied customers into advocates because they give people language for why the brand deserves attention. Loyalty programs, useful surprises and meaningful access can reinforce the story through experience, not only words.

3. Who is your ideal customer?

Keep the people you hope to serve in view when designing the brand. Customers often vouch for brands in which they recognize themselves. Their needs, tastes, contexts and language should influence the experience without causing the company to imitate every trend.

Consider how people will encounter, use and share the product or service. Logo, packaging, color, typography, hashtags and taglines work best when they contribute to one coherent experience.

Be true to the organization and attentive to the customer. A strong identity gives both sides something recognizable to believe in.

Brand essence, story and audience are connected. Together they give creative choices meaning and help the entire team deliver a consistent promise.
